Leaders from government, public relations, and the media gathered in Abuja for the third Raymond Dokpesi Annual Diamond Lecture to advocate for a renewed framework strengthening democratic institutions across the country. Discussions centred on the theme of media, democratic consolidation, and national development, drawing prominent figures who reflected on the vital role independent broadcasting plays in fostering accountability.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma addressed attendees by proposing a three-way pact involving government, the media, and citizens. He urged public officials to move away from viewing the press as adversaries, while challenging media owners to prioritize ethical standards and investigative rigour above commercial interests. He further noted that public scrutiny remains essential for tracking infrastructure spending and ensuring that state resources translate into tangible benefits for the populace.

Recalling the historical contributions of late media icon High Chief Raymond Dokpesi, speakers highlighted the establishment of independent broadcasting as a catalyst for political discourse following the return to civilian rule in 1999. Raymond Dokpesi Jnr noted that his father viewed broadcasting as a revolutionary tool for democratization rather than a purely commercial venture. He announced plans by DAAR Communications to launch a media incubation and civic-tech initiative aimed at equipping young creators and first-time voters with digital tools.

Additionally, Nigeria Institute of Public Relations President Dr. Ike Neliaku called on public and private sector stakeholders to leverage the upcoming World Public Relations Forum hosted by Nigeria to project a positive image of the country to international delegates from over one hundred nations. The event concluded with a proposal championed by Governor Uzodimma to establish a National Media Centre dedicated to research and development journalism in honour of the late media pioneer.
