The National Orientation Agency has emphasized the need for stronger cooperation with the Independent National Electoral Commission to tackle potential threats to the electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections in Akwa Ibom State. This appeal was made during an Electoral Risk Management workshop hosted in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss proactive measures for safeguarding the democratic process.
Representing the Akwa Ibom State Director of the NOA, Akpan Abraham stressed that comprehensive risk management is vital for delivering credible, free, and peaceful polls. He pointed out several factors that could undermine public trust, including electoral violence, hate speech, rampant misinformation, disinformation, vote buying, and the misuse of social media platforms.
To counter these challenges, the agency highlighted voter education and continuous public enlightenment as indispensable strategies. The NOA pledged to intensify its campaigns to mobilize citizens toward fulfilling their civic duties, encouraging peaceful participation, and fostering issue-based political discourse rather than personal attacks on candidates or institutions.
Stakeholders across the board, encompassing political leaders, youths, traditional authorities, religious figures, and the media, were urged to actively contribute to maintaining peace. The agency called on residents to dismiss fake news, avoid inflammatory language, and respect established electoral regulations throughout the election cycle.
Reaffirming its institutional commitment, the NOA stated it would maintain robust partnerships with INEC, security agencies, and civil society groups. By fostering these collaborative efforts, the agency aims to strengthen democratic values and ensure a secure environment for voters in Akwa Ibom State.
