Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives Philip Agbese has commended the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, Bashir Bayo Ojulari, for implementing operational and structural reforms at the state-owned energy firm. Speaking during an address before a select committee of the British Parliament at the House of Lords in Westminster, the federal lawmaker stated that recent leadership decisions have shifted the oil company away from historical challenges of opacity and systemic inefficiency.
Agbese noted that the current management approach has helped recover crude oil output, reduced contract execution costs, and increased the consistency of financial remittances to the Federation Account. According to him, these improvements provide essential fiscal backing for national infrastructure, security programs, and social services across the country.
The legislator highlighted several key milestones achieved under the current administration, including increased output by NNPC Exploration and Production Limited, the restoration of routine financial and operational reporting, and continued progress on major gas infrastructure projects like the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano pipeline. He also pointed out that timely cash-call payments have helped restore confidence among international joint-venture partners and global investors.
According to the lawmaker, the introduction of stricter commercial discipline and adherence to the Petroleum Industry Act have positioned the company to operate as a sustainable business entity rather than a political patronage structure. He added that the leadership's willingness to address loss-making assets and demand value for money demonstrates a commitment to long-term national economic value creation.
Agbese urged international energy stakeholders and partners to deepen their engagement with the reformed national oil company, asserting that transparency and commercial credibility provide a reliable foundation for future collaboration. He concluded that protecting the current reform trajectory is vital for ensuring that Nigeria's hydrocarbon resources continue to generate revenue and drive broader economic development.
