The family of the late Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammadu Maccido, has marked two decades since his tragic passing by calling on Nigerian leaders to embrace dialogue, accountability, and religious tolerance. The appeal was issued to address the insecurity, communal tensions, and social divisions currently threatening national unity across the country.

Late Sultan Maccido lost his life alongside his son, Senator Badamasi Maccido, his grandson, and dozens of other passengers and crew members in the October 29, 2006, crash of an ADC Airlines Boeing 737 shortly after take-off from Abuja. In a statement signed by Bello Maccido, the family reflected on the monarch's enduring legacy and emphasized that his leadership philosophy remains deeply relevant to contemporary challenges.

The family urged political leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens to emulate the late monarch's preference for consultation and consensus-building over confrontation. During his decade on the throne, Maccido was recognized as a prominent figure in traditional and religious leadership, serving as the President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and fostering interfaith engagement, education, and public health initiatives.

Beyond remembering the monarch's leadership style, the family's twentieth-anniversary statement also underscored the need for enhanced public safety and regulatory accountability in the aviation sector. They emphasized that the remembrance should extend beyond mourning into a dedicated collective effort toward building a peaceful, just, and united society that honors those lost in the disaster.
