The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has announced a weekly financial allowance of N100,000 for each person placed in quarantine following potential exposure to the country's confirmed Ebola patient in the Federal Capital Territory. Jide Idris, the director-general of the public health agency, revealed the measure during a press briefing held in Abuja, explaining that the funds are intended to offset personal financial pressures experienced by those isolated.
According to the health agency leadership, several individuals undergoing mandatory observation reported that confinement disrupted their normal business activities and hindered their ability to support dependents. While the federal agency previously covered lodging and meals for people staying inside designated monitoring centers, officials determined that supplementary cash assistance was necessary to address these grievances and encourage compliance with quarantine protocols.
Idris characterized the monetary distribution as an emergency measure that fell outside the scope of the organization's initial operational budget, noting that authorities will continuously evaluate the arrangement as the situation develops. He also emphasized that state administrations bear primary responsibility for funding, supplying materials, and furnishing facilities required to manage individuals identified as contacts during public health crises.
In tandem with the financial announcement, health officials have tracked fifty-three primary contacts associated with the confirmed patient in the capital territory. Among them, forty-four were located at the medical facility where initial treatment occurred, while nine additional individuals had separate interactions. The documented contacts include family members, drivers, healthcare providers, and sample collection personnel, all categorized by exposure level to facilitate medical monitoring.
