The Niger Delta Development Commission has formally dismissed social media reports claiming that a bridge project under construction in the Otuogori community of Bayelsa State had suffered a collapse. Officials clarified that while an incident did take place at the construction site of the six-hundred-metre Otuogori-Otuegwe Bridge, the main structure itself has not yet been built and therefore could not have fallen down.
Speaking to journalists during an inspection visit, the Bayelsa State Director for the Commission characterized the online claims as misleading. He explained that workers are still engaged in the preliminary phase of crossing the beams, meaning no completed bridge exists at the location. He further rejected notions of structural failure, attributing the occurrence to an operational accident during construction work.
The director expressed confidence that the construction firm would rectify any issues identified during the official assessment and successfully deliver the infrastructure project. He also assured the public that no bridges have collapsed anywhere in Bayelsa State or across the broader Niger Delta region. According to leadership statements, current board management places a strong emphasis on rigorous quality assurance, utilizing regular site inspections by both internal engineers and independent consultants.
Elaborating on the technical aspects, the managing director of the construction company explained that the incident happened while workers were launching and positioning beams onto their bearings. Because the components were resting on their supports but were not yet permanently secured, one of them slid during the placement process. Representatives confirmed that strict safety protocols implemented at the site successfully prevented any injuries or loss of life.
