Academic Staff Union at UNICROSS Resumes Industrial Action Over Unfulfilled Pledges

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Cross River State chapter, has officially resumed its industrial action following a 104-day suspension period. Union leaders announced the decision on Monday after determining that government authorities had failed to honor the terms that previously ended the strike on July 21, 2026. The resumption plunges the institution back into uncertainty as academic activities face fresh disruptions.

Dr. Patrick Ushie, the chapter chairman, explained that the union exercised patience while awaiting compliance with the mutually agreed timelines. According to the union, government representatives missed multiple deadlines and ignored subsequent formal notices. Ushie emphasized that the current industrial action will remain indefinite until all outstanding grievances receive satisfactory resolutions from the administration.

The initial strike began on May 19, 2026, driven by longstanding welfare concerns and unfulfilled commitments related to the union's national agreements. Academic staff previously outlined a comprehensive list of eleven demands, which included the full implementation of updated salary structures and enhancements to general working conditions for educators across the institution.

Additional demands center on financial grievances such as promotion arrears, earned academic allowances dating back to previous years, and the prompt disbursement of monthly salaries by the third day of every month. The union also highlighted unpaid wage awards, increased institutional funding, and the remittance of millions in overdue check-off dues stretching back several years.
