The Ondo State Police Command has uncovered a suspected counterfeit currency production site located within the Odigbo Local Government Area of the state. During the operation, law enforcement authorities arrested one suspect and successfully recovered three bags filled with suspected fake United States dollar notes, alongside other incriminating items.
According to police reports, the operation was initiated after a local resident, Yusuf Nasiru, filed a formal complaint at the Okitipupa Divisional Headquarters. The complainant stated that two individuals approached him at his shop to exchange US dollars for their naira equivalent. He handed over six thousand dollars, valued at approximately eight point six million naira, before the suspects returned the bills under the pretext that they lacked sufficient funds to complete the transaction.
Upon closer inspection, the complainant realized that the returned dollar notes were counterfeit and promptly alerted local authorities. Utilizing intelligence gathering and technical tracking methods, police operatives traced one of the primary suspects, Peter Desmond, to a hideout in Kiniso Village via Ajue within Odigbo Local Government Area.
During the subsequent raid on October 29, police operatives arrested Desmond, though additional occupants managed to escape by fleeing through the property's perimeter fence. A thorough search of the premises yielded three bags of suspected counterfeit dollar bills and a small wooden box, all of which have been secured as exhibits for ongoing investigative proceedings.
State police leadership has directed investigators to intensify efforts to apprehend the remaining suspects who managed to evade capture during the raid. Authorities continue to urge members of the public to exercise caution when conducting foreign currency exchanges and to report any suspicious financial activities through recognized legal channels.
