A political faction within the ruling party has formally requested an explanation from Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma regarding the unexpected suspension of local government elections across the state. The group known as the APC South East Integrity Movement issued a statement expressing deep concern that the electoral process was halted abruptly despite preparations having reached advanced stages. In the statement released from Enugu, the organization questioned the rationale behind the sudden halt and appealed for transparency from the state administration.
Signed by Chijioke Afamefuna, the document further cautioned party members against engaging in any actions that could be construed as anti-party activity as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. The association argued that internal discord or actions undermining the collective electoral success of the party would not be tolerated. Furthermore, the group called upon the national leadership of the All Progressives Congress to intervene and investigate the circumstances surrounding the delayed polls to protect the party's strategic interests.
Highlighting broader governance issues, the movement referenced the Supreme Court judgment delivered in July 2024 concerning local government financial autonomy. The association urged federal authorities, including the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Ministry of Finance, to ensure that statutory council allocations are strictly administered through democratically elected officials rather than caretaker committees. Drawing parallels to disputes in other states, the group maintained that adherence to legal principles regarding local governance is vital for democratic integrity and electoral trust.
