A tragic shooting incident at ASCO Camp in Ajaokuta, Kogi State, has left two serving police officers dead after a police corporal allegedly killed a female colleague and subsequently took his own life.
The incident, which took place on October 23, 2026, involved Corporal Amos Yusuf and Woman Corporal Grace Onimisi. The Kogi State Police Command formally confirmed the occurrence in a public statement released on Sunday by the command's public relations officer, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat.
According to the official report, authorities received notification of the shooting at approximately 11:04 p.m. In response, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ajaokuta led a team of officers directly to the scene to assess the situation and secure the area.
Preliminary investigations by law enforcement indicated that Corporal Yusuf, who was assigned to night duty at the time, allegedly shot Corporal Onimisi before using the weapon to end his own life. Sources familiar with the background of the two officers suggested that the tragic event followed the recent conclusion of a romantic relationship between them, though official inquiries are ongoing to establish the definitive motive.
Following the shooting, both injured officers were rushed to separate medical facilities for urgent intervention. However, attending medical personnel pronounced them dead upon arrival. Their bodies were later moved to the mortuary at ASCO Hospital for preservation.
Investigators at the scene recovered an AK-47 rifle alongside four expended cartridges to serve as exhibits in the ongoing inquiry. The Kogi State Police Command announced that the case file has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department to facilitate a thorough and comprehensive examination of the circumstances.
CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, the Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, extended his condolences to the grieving families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officers. Meanwhile, the command has urged members of the public to avoid speculation while official investigators continue their work to uncover the full details of the incident.
