Vice President Kashim Shettima stated that the economic policies implemented by President Bola Tinubu successfully averted a severe national financial crisis and established the groundwork for long-term growth. Speaking during a political rally in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Shettima pointed to the removal of fuel subsidies, exchange rate unification, and tax revisions as vital steps taken to stabilize the country.
According to the Vice President, the administration inherited a precarious financial standing in May 2023, characterized by depleted external reserves and structural vulnerabilities. He noted that gross foreign reserves have since grown significantly and international credit ratings have improved, reflecting renewed confidence in the nation's economic trajectory. He projected that ongoing initiatives will expand the economy toward a one-trillion-dollar scale over the next decade.
During his address, Shettima directed sharp criticism at key opposition leaders, questioning their past performance and proposed policy alternatives. He dismissed the economic proposals of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and criticized the public sector record of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, arguing that their respective leadership backgrounds lacked the requisite depth to manage modern governance challenges.
Highlighting federal social and economic programs, the Vice President pointed to interventions such as student loan provisions through NELFUND and consumer credit frameworks designed to assist working families. He emphasized that these measures, alongside targeted agricultural developments, form part of a broader strategy to elevate living standards and transition the country into a middle-income bracket.
Concluding his remarks, Shettima praised the electorate in Rivers State for their political consistency and urged voters to maintain their support for the current administration in the upcoming 2027 elections. He cautioned that altering the current course could jeopardize the structural gains achieved so far and encouraged citizens to back the continuation of the reform agenda.
