Residents of the Ohafia ancient kingdom in Abia State have been assured that electricity supply will be fully restored to the area within the space of one week. The assurance was given by the Abia State Deputy Governor, Ikechukwu Emetu, while addressing a gathering during the annual cultural celebrations held over the weekend at the Central School Playground in Elu Ohafia. According to the state government, ongoing efforts are designed to permanently resolve the prolonged blackout that has affected the community and revive local socioeconomic activities.
Alongside the power restoration update, the deputy governor used the occasion to unveil a major agricultural support scheme aimed at transforming Ohafia into a self-sufficient yam-producing hub. Government officials noted with concern that despite the region's rich agricultural heritage, local communities had previously relied on outside sources to supply yams for their traditional festivities. To reverse this trend, the state administration intends to partner with local stakeholders and traditional leaders to expand farming capacity across the region.
Under the newly announced agricultural blueprint, traditional leaders known as Ndi Eze Ji will receive direct support, while a supervisory committee will oversee cultivation efforts. The government plans to deploy tractors for mechanised farming, conduct comprehensive land delineation, and distribute quality yam seedlings to local farmers. To foster healthy competition, awards will be presented to communities that achieve exceptional production milestones ahead of the subsequent year's festival.
While delivering greetings from Governor Alex Otti, the deputy governor emphasized that the gathering remained strictly a cultural celebration rather than a political platform. He reminded attendees that the last election cycle concluded with the swearing-in of the current administration, urging citizens to maintain peace, unity, and ongoing cooperation with the government. Traditional rulers and event organizers, including the Udumeze of Ohafia Ancient Kingdom, Elder Ezie Awa Oji Udonsi, expressed gratitude for improved rural infrastructure, enhanced security, and favorable agricultural prospects in the area.
