Healthcare professionals in Nigeria have been urged to integrate artificial intelligence and digital health innovations into their practices to improve clinical decision-making and patient safety. Ebunoluwa Adejuyigbe, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, delivered this message during the institution's third Faculty of Clinical Sciences Conference. The event, themed around artificial intelligence and digital medicine, highlighted the potential of modern technological tools to transform medical diagnostics, patient monitoring, and overall healthcare delivery systems.

Represented at the conference by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration and Clinical Services, Adejuyigbe noted that advancements such as telemedicine, digital health records, and predictive analytics offer unprecedented opportunities for the health sector. However, the university leadership emphasized that the adoption of these technologies must be carefully balanced with robust ethical standards, data privacy protections, cybersecurity measures, and equity. Officials stressed that technology should serve to complement rather than replace human empathy, compassion, and professional clinical judgement.

During the keynote presentation, Folajimi Adebowale, Chief Executive Officer of AEyeCARE Limited, discussed how artificial intelligence can help mitigate workforce challenges in Nigeria, including physician shortages and the migration of medical personnel. He shared international and regional evidence demonstrating AI-supported successes in breast cancer screening, tuberculosis detection, and diabetic retinopathy identification. He also pointed to home-grown innovations such as a Nigerian-founded technology that analyzes infant cries to detect birth asphyxia and portable retinal screening devices designed for low-connectivity environments.

Organizers and speakers alike underscored that Nigerian medical institutions must actively participate in global digital health transformations through research, ethical implementation, and collaboration. The conference featured academic presentations, poster sessions, and discussions aimed at equipping students and practitioners with the competencies necessary for the future of medicine.
