Abia State has established a designated isolation facility at the recently renovated Mother and Child Hospital in Umuahia as a precautionary step against potential health emergencies. Governor Alex Otti announced the measure during his monthly media chat, clarifying that while no cases of the disease have been detected within the state, authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure public safety.
The governor emphasized that the newly prepared facility will remain closed to general public use unless required for emergency health response. He urged residents to remain calm while continuing to observe necessary health guidelines, assuring the public that the state administration is fully prepared to handle any epidemiological challenges should they arise.
During the same media interaction, Governor Otti provided updates on broader healthcare initiatives across the state, highlighting the performance of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau. According to the governor, medical personnel have screened approximately 31,000 individuals and performed surgeries on 1,811 patients, which included 304 free cataract procedures. The administration has also established 25 specialized eye care centres spanning the 17 local government areas, with approvals granted to expand the network to 29 facilities.
In addition to healthcare updates, the governor addressed public transportation policy, noting that Abia has chosen to prioritize electric vehicles for state-managed public transit rather than adopting Compressed Natural Gas vehicles. Although firms have expressed interest in building CNG refueling stations in the region, the administration considers electric mobility a more advanced step for public transport infrastructure while remaining open to private sector investments in gas-powered alternatives.
