Political tension escalated sharply in Delta State after supporters of a movement backing the presidential ambitions of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso were attacked during a public demonstration in Asaba. The incident occurred during a scheduled one-million-man march, leaving multiple participants injured and several campaign vehicles vandalized. Organizers reported that the gathering was peaceful until armed individuals disrupted the procession, smashing branded vehicles and forcing participants to flee for safety.
Victor Ochei, a prominent political figure associated with the movement, condemned the incident and called upon state authorities to launch an immediate investigation. Ochei accused political opponents of orchestrating the intimidation tactics to suppress opposition voices. According to campaign coordinators, more than thirty vehicles were destroyed during the confrontation, and several injured participants required hospital treatment.
Favour Emerue, coordinator of the mobilization group, expressed concern over the safety of political participants and questioned the absence of security personnel during the height of the disturbances. Organizers maintained that they had previously engaged with law enforcement agencies and adjusted their assembly routes in accordance with official directives prior to the event.
In response to the allegations, representatives of the ruling party in the state dismissed the accusations as baseless and lacking empirical evidence. Party spokespersons asserted that the claims were unfounded and suggested that internal disagreements within the opposition faction might have contributed to the chaos. Authorities have faced renewed calls from various stakeholders to ensure thorough investigations and maintain public safety as political activities continue across the region.
