Otunba Segun Showunmi, a member of the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, has appealed to Nigerian journalists to actively counter misinformation and inflammatory propaganda from political actors as the country approaches the 2027 general elections. Addressing media practitioners during a press briefing in Kaduna, Showunmi stressed that the unchecked spread of fake news and manipulated digital content poses a severe risk to national stability, peace, and democratic processes.

Highlighting the growing threat of artificial intelligence and social media manipulation, the APC chieftain urged media workers to maintain professional integrity and demand issue-based campaigns from both ruling and opposition politicians. He cautioned that unchecked falsehoods could easily incite public tension and exploit ethnic and religious divisions. He encouraged reporters to scrutinize all political narratives strictly and refuse to let sectional interests undermine peaceful coexistence.

Showunmi also expressed appreciation for the warm reception Kaduna residents extended to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his campaign delegation during a recent visit. He noted that the positive turnout defied pessimistic predictions and reaffirmed Kaduna's historic status as a harmonious melting pot of diverse communities. Furthermore, he urged political figures to respect existing social bonds rather than exploit regional or religious sentiments for short-term electoral gains.

Turning to broader governance issues, Showunmi defended the administration's economic reforms and appealed for continued support to consolidate infrastructure and educational advancements. He emphasized that poverty alleviation and service delivery remain shared responsibilities involving state and local leaders, not just the federal presidency. Finally, he commended the dedication of security personnel tackling national challenges and thanked journalists for their vital role in preserving democratic accountability.
