Residents of Rigasa in Kaduna State are set to benefit from a new power infrastructure project after years of living without adequate electricity supply. The Niger Delta Power Holding Company officially broke ground on a 7.5-megavolt-ampere substation designed to serve the community within the Igabi Local Government Area. State officials and company representatives gathered for the ceremony to mark the start of construction, which aims to resolve long-standing energy deficits in the area.
The project involves constructing a 7.5MVA, 33/11kV injection substation alongside a 1.5-kilometre 33 kV line and a 2-kilometre 11 kV line. These additions are intended to strengthen local electricity distribution and provide reliable power access to households and small businesses that have struggled with prolonged outages for nearly fifteen years.
Hadiza Balarabe, the deputy governor of Kaduna State, represented Governor Uba Sani at the groundbreaking ceremony. She described the initiative as a crucial intervention that will significantly alleviate the hardship faced by local residents. The development followed collaborative efforts and advocacy involving community stakeholders and the management of the power holding company.
Representatives from the Niger Delta Power Holding Company emphasized that the project aligns with broader national efforts to improve electricity delivery across the country. While the state-owned firm traditionally focuses on power generation, officials noted that addressing downstream bottlenecks through targeted investments in distribution infrastructure remains vital for ensuring generated electricity actually reaches consumers.
