Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North and serving as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Reparations and Repatriation, has issued a formal condolence message regarding the passing of Professor Kamene Okonjo. The late matriarch of the Okonjo royal family of Ogwashi-Uku in Delta State died at the age of 96, leaving behind a legacy recognized both locally and internationally.
In a statement signed personally by the senator, Nwoko honored the memory of the deceased by highlighting her professional and social contributions. He described her as an accomplished scholar, a distinguished sociologist, and a steadfast advocate for women rights and empowerment. According to the lawmaker, her lifetime was characterized by intellectual rigor, deep compassion, and dedicated service to society.
Extending his sympathies on behalf of his own family and the constituents of Delta North, Nwoko addressed his message to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who serves as the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation. He also extended his respects to the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, Obi Ifechukwude Anishi Okonjo II, and the wider Okonjo family, acknowledging that her death is a significant loss to the Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom, the Anioma nation, and the country as a whole.
Nwoko noted that Professor Kamene Okonjo fulfilled multiple significant roles during her lifetime, including serving as the wife of the late Obi Professor Chukwuka Okonjo and raising prominent children whose work has gained global recognition. He remarked that despite the notable public standing and achievements of her family members, the sorrow of losing a mother remains profound and difficult to bear.
Concluding his message, the senator offered prayers for the grieving family members and associates. He asked for divine strength and fortitude for Dr Okonjo-Iweala and the traditional leadership of Ogwashi-Uku to weather the period of mourning, while expressing hope that the values and principles championed by the late professor will continue to inspire future generations.
