Security experts have raised concerns that the creation of state police across Nigeria may fail to eradicate kidnapping, banditry, and other security challenges unless backed by robust financial investments, modern equipment, and enhanced personnel welfare. The caution follows the decision by the Ondo State House of Assembly to approve a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at establishing state police to better protect farmers and strengthen grassroots crime prevention.

Retired Commissioner of Police Samuel Adetunji noted that the ultimate success of any state-level policing framework relies heavily on proper implementation, genuine government commitment, and strong community backing. He emphasized that policing fundamentally serves the public and requires an environment where law enforcement officers can operate effectively without undue interference.

Another retired police officer, Femi Joseph, highlighted that chronic issues such as insufficient funding, outdated investigative techniques, and poor staff welfare have historically crippled security agencies. He stressed the necessity of deploying advanced surveillance technology, including drones and helicopters, to track criminal elements across vast forest terrain rather than relying solely on foot patrols. Joseph also advocated for improved salaries, comprehensive insurance coverage, and better retirement benefits to boost overall force morale.

Ondo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Olukayode Ajulo, SAN, acknowledged the state assembly's vote as a crucial milestone toward a more responsive security architecture. However, he reminded stakeholders that the initiative must still navigate the full constitutional amendment process, requiring concurrence from the National Assembly, approval from at least two-thirds of state legislatures, and presidential assent. Ajulo further underscored the importance of building robust safeguards into the eventual legal framework to guarantee proper funding, maintain high professional standards, and shield the service from potential political abuse.
