Professional football club Abia Warriors have formally challenged the five-match suspension recently imposed on their multimedia officer, Chidera Favour Igwe, by league authorities. The Umuahia-based management described the disciplinary action as disproportionate and unjust, insisting that the official did not commit the infractions alleged by the league following their recent home fixture.
The controversy stems from the club's Matchday 10 encounter on October 25, during which the media officer was accused of attempting to disrupt a live television broadcast. According to the club's formal appeal submitted to the Nigeria Premier Football League, Igwe merely voiced her frustration regarding questionable refereeing decisions during the match and requested that a broadcast cameraman redirect his equipment away from her after she noticed she was being filmed continuously.
Abia Warriors firmly denied that their staff member physically interfered with broadcast personnel or obstructed them from carrying out their professional responsibilities. The club has urged league organizers to review available match footage to establish the actual sequence of events and to reconsider the severity of the sanction levied against the official.
In addition to contesting the suspension of their media personnel, club representatives also addressed a separate notice concerning alleged security lapses during the same fixture. Management asserted that comprehensive security measures had been implemented at the venue, pointing out that visiting team members departed the stadium safely without experiencing any harassment or security breaches.
Seeking a thorough review of the entire disciplinary notice, Abia Warriors requested that the league authorities consult with the visiting team to verify the adequacy of security arrangements. The club reaffirmed its dedication to upholding professional standards, respecting league regulations, and fostering positive relationships with all stakeholders involved in domestic football operations.
