Retirees in Edo State have announced their intention to mobilise widespread political support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the upcoming 2027 general election. The commitment follows the recent decision by Governor Monday Okpebholo to approve the return of public sector retirees from the Contributory Pension Scheme to the Defined Benefits Scheme. Association representatives expressed their gratitude during a formal visit to the Government House in Benin City, stating that the policy change resolved financial hardships experienced under the previous administration.
Asemota Osagie Andrew, chairman of the Association of Retirees under the Contributory Pension Scheme, addressed state officials during the visit. He explained that after serving the public sector for decades, many retirees had faced severe financial distress under the former arrangement. He praised the current governor for fulfilling his promises swiftly and asserted that the association would take charge of delivering the 2.5 million votes previously pledged by the governor to support the federal administration.
Secretary of the association Aikpitanyi Felix further criticised past government handling of retiree grievances, contrasting it with the prompt action taken by the current state leadership. Other members of the delegation echoed these sentiments, highlighting improvements in welfare concerns and infrastructure development across the state. They maintained that their appreciation would be clearly demonstrated at the ballot box when voters head to the polls.
In his response, Governor Okpebholo emphasized that his administration remains dedicated to addressing the fundamental challenges facing the population of Edo State. He stated that his policy decisions are strictly designed to benefit ordinary citizens and improve local living standards. Furthermore, the governor acknowledged the support received from President Tinubu, attributing parts of the state administration's early successes to federal backing and cooperation.
