Delta State Approves Retirement Age Extension to 65 for Clinical Health Workers

The Delta State Government has officially extended the retirement age of clinical health workers to 65 years. State officials explained that the policy is designed to combat the ongoing migration of skilled medical personnel and preserve vital institutional knowledge within public healthcare institutions.

Joseph Onojaeme, the Commissioner for Health, clarified that the extension is not applied automatically. Personnel seeking to benefit from the policy are required to submit formal applications six months prior to reaching their statutory retirement age. In addition to timely applications, candidates must undergo comprehensive medical fitness assessments to verify their physical capability to continue service.

The policy encompasses a wide array of professional cadres within the state health sector. Eligible groups include medical officers, nursing officers, pharmacists, dental officers, community health officers, assistant radiographers, speech therapists, dietitians, optometrists, and other relevant technical personnel.

According to the administration, the continued departure of experienced medical practitioners abroad has placed substantial pressure on local healthcare delivery. By offering an additional five years of service under strict conditions, the state hopes to ease the manpower deficit and improve overall healthcare standards.

In addition to the retirement policy updates, the health commissioner addressed public concerns regarding epidemic preparedness, reassuring residents that no Ebola cases have been detected in the state. He noted that authorities have increased training for health personnel and are procuring protective equipment to safeguard workers and enhance emergency response capabilities.
