Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has shared that citizens in the state have embraced him with a new moniker, reflecting a warm public reception during his recent walks through the state capital. Speaking during a live broadcast aired by ITV and Radio, the governor recounted a recent stroll along Sapele Road where members of the public greeted him enthusiastically.
According to the governor, his previous nickname of "Akpako Rescue" has transitioned among locals into "Okpe's baby." He expressed appreciation for the positive interactions, noting that the ability to walk freely among residents without facing hostility brings him genuine satisfaction and demonstrates a strong connection with the local populace.
Beyond local engagements, Governor Okpebholo used the platform to declare his strong backing for President Bola Tinubu, attributing his support to tangible progress resulting from federal economic interventions. He argued that the current administration's policies are beginning to bear fruit, highlighting improvements in the foreign exchange market and adjustments in commodity pricing.
Focusing specifically on the currency market, the governor asserted that the naira has experienced strengthening against the dollar and that exchange rates have achieved a level of stability. He challenged the common domestic narrative that prices, once increased in Nigeria, never decline, pointing to gradual shifts in the cost of acquiring foreign currency.
Furthermore, Okpebholo defended the controversial removal of the petrol subsidy implemented by the federal government. He maintained that ending the subsidy was a necessary measure to dismantle a system where national resources were allegedly concentrated in the hands of a privileged few rather than serving the broader population.
