Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri has stated that only a God-fearing individual will succeed him in office, setting a clear marker for politicians nursing ambitions for the state governorship. The governor made the remarks during the fifteenth edition of the Bayelsa Thanksgiving held in Yenagoa, where he advised all individuals eyeing the state's top position to prayerfully seek the face of God.
Governor Diri, whose second and final four-year tenure is scheduled to conclude on February 14, 2028, emphasized that divine endorsement supersedes human maneuvering. He maintained that nobody can oppose someone who has received approval from the Almighty, reiterating that the state has been dedicated to God and that divine will ultimately prevails in regional affairs.
During the religious gathering, the governor called on the residents of Bayelsa State to maintain unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence, arguing that these virtues are essential for sustained development. He reaffirmed his administration's ongoing commitment to impacting citizens positively and highlighted the government's political will to transform the state, noting that Bayelsa boasts a favorable environment for progress.
Reflecting on his tenure, Governor Diri expressed gratitude to the local population for their continued support and backing throughout his time in office. He noted that those familiar with the historical context of Yenagoa and Bayelsa can readily observe the transformation that has taken place over the years, making public thanksgiving appropriate.
The event also featured a sermon by Joseph Opelema, a former chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the state, who spoke on the responsibilities of citizens and believers in public life. Citing biblical passages, Opelema encouraged individuals in leadership and society to display virtues such as justice, love, accountability, and sacrifice, while describing Bayelsa as a region abundantly endowed with natural and human resources capable of driving future prosperity.
