Edo State Communities Voice Frustration Over Idle Council Road Machinery

Residents living across various communities in Edo State have voiced strong concerns regarding the alleged underutilisation of heavy-duty equipment supplied by the state government to the eighteen local government areas. The machinery, which includes payloaders, tippers, and graders, was originally intended to help councils rehabilitate deteriorating rural roads, clear drainage systems, manage refuse disposal, and improve agricultural access routes.

Local inhabitants argue that despite the availability of these construction and maintenance vehicles, many community roads continue to suffer from severe degradation. Expressing frustration over the current state of infrastructure, critics questioned the maintenance practices and overall commitment of council leadership to grassroots development projects.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a resident in the Oredo Local Government Area questioned why brand-new equipment supplied to improve public works appeared to remain idle while local thoroughfares deteriorated. Another local community member, Idemudia Osifo from Ikpoba-Okha, noted that the machinery was meant to eliminate historical excuses regarding equipment shortages that previously hindered local infrastructure projects.

In response to these allegations, local government officials have defended their operational records. Hon. Osaro Eribo, the Chairman of Egor Local Government Area, firmly rejected claims that the equipment was being neglected, stating that his administration had actively deployed the machinery for road grading and waste evacuation across the area's ten wards.

Eribo explained that the arrival of the state-supplied equipment significantly reduced financial expenditures previously allocated toward hiring private machinery for public works. While acknowledging that conditions might vary across other jurisdictions, he maintained that the local administration was utilising the resources to address community infrastructure needs.
