Abia State is set to welcome major legal figures and dignitaries as it prepares to host the 2026 Nigerian Bar Association Section on Public Interest and Development Law Annual Conference. The event, scheduled to take place from November 9 to November 13 at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, is expected to draw more than two thousand delegates from across the country.
Among the high-profile figures anticipated at the gathering are former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Chief Justice of Nigeria Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, and Attorney-General of the Federation Prince Lateef Fagbemi. The conference will bring together judges, legal practitioners, policymakers, civil society representatives, academics, and development partners to discuss critical issues concerning justice delivery and democratic governance.
During a press briefing held at the Ministry of Justice in Umuahia, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Sir Ikechukwu Uwanna, confirmed that Governor Alex Otti will officially declare the conference open. Uwanna expressed the state administration's readiness to ensure a successful event and noted that the gathering provides an opportunity to showcase ongoing transformations within Abia's justice and correctional sectors.
Organizers and state officials, including NBA-SPIDEL Chairperson Prof. Uju Agomoh and Central Planning Committee Chairman Sir Ejike Ezenwa, emphasized that the conference agenda extends beyond theoretical debates. They urged participants to formulate actionable recommendations designed to strengthen institutional frameworks, protect fundamental human rights, and advance the rule of law throughout Nigeria.
The multi-day program will feature pre-conference engagements, professional development workshops, and specialized technical sessions aimed at addressing systemic challenges within the legal architecture. Local authorities expressed confidence that hosting the national conference will further spotlight the state's judicial reforms and foster collaborative approaches to national development.
