The Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters has completed the screening and clearance of Eze Anaba, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors and Editor of Vanguard Newspapers, alongside 15 other nominees designated for the governing board of the National Human Rights Commission. The legislative review forms part of the ongoing process to reconstitute the leadership of the commission following a formal request for confirmation submitted by the executive.

Led by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, the panel conducted the evaluations in Abuja to assess the qualifications of the candidates before submitting its final recommendations. Committee leaders noted that the findings would be laid before the full Senate during plenary sessions for final consideration and official confirmation.

Speaking with reporters after the screening session concluded, Anaba noted that his decades-long career in journalism has closely intersected with human rights advocacy and the defense of fundamental freedoms. He emphasized that joining the board would allow him to continue and expand upon the advocacy work he has pursued throughout his professional life, while exercising caution until the full legislative process concludes.

Adegbonmire explained the structural composition of the board, noting that it comprises 16 members in total. He clarified that certain designated seats representing key government ministries, including justice, interior, and foreign affairs, were exempt from individual legislative screening because the governing statute establishes representation based on official rank and office rather than named individuals.

The final approval of the nominees remains subject to formal adoption by the upper legislative chamber during plenary. Once the Senate concludes its deliberations, the official legislative position will be communicated to the executive branch through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
