Two widows whose husband was allegedly killed and buried in the Obagie N Evbousa community within the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State have appealed to Governor Monday Okpebholo for intervention and justice. The grieving women, Mrs Joy Azuka and Mrs Favour Azuka, staged a demonstration at the secretariat of the Edo State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists to draw public attention to their plight.

The widows alleged that their husband, Sunday Azuka, along with two other individuals, was attacked and buried alive on November 4, 2024. According to the family, the victim was a bricklayer who had travelled to the community for work on the day of the incident, leaving behind two young sons who have since dropped out of school due to financial hardship.

Favour Azuka recounted receiving a distressing phone call from a community member reporting the attack by armed men. She stated that a police officer who subsequently accompanied the family to the location to effect arrests was also shot and sustained severe injuries, though he survived the assault. The widows claimed that thugs allegedly loyal to a local figure were responsible for the violence.

During the protest, Joy Azuka alleged that influential individuals were attempting to secure the release of a prime suspect currently in the custody of the Department of State Services. She also stated that the family rejected an initial financial compensation offer from the suspects and expressed frustration over difficulties in meeting with state security officials.

Responding to the allegations, Paul Akhere, the Special Adviser on Security to the Edo State Governor, acknowledged familiarity with the case and confirmed that a suspect had been arrested. Akhere stated that the violence stemmed from a leadership dispute over the position of community youth chairman, adding that discussions regarding financial compensation for the family had been initiated.
