The Abia State Ministry of Health has instituted a multi-sectoral Ebola Preparedness and Response Technical Working Group aimed at bolstering the state capability to prevent and manage potential disease emergencies. Okey Kanu, the state Commissioner for Information, disclosed this information during a media briefing in Umuahia following a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Alex Otti. Kanu noted that the newly formed body has already established a comprehensive preparedness and response framework.
As part of these precautionary steps, authorities have designated the Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre in Amachara to serve as a temporary isolation facility. This designation remains in place while construction work continues on the dedicated Infectious Disease Hospital located in Aba. Despite these proactive measures, the commissioner assured residents that the state had not registered any cases of diseases of public health importance during the evaluation window spanning late October and early November.
During the same briefing, officials highlighted broader achievements within the state health sector, including plans to host a specialised stroke and neurovascular centre at the Amachara facility. This development follows health sector presentations made during an international symposium in Sweden. Additionally, the federal health ministry acknowledged the state for its ongoing promotion efforts, while local programs continue addressing breast cancer awareness and other public health priorities.
