The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority has launched a formal investigation into an aviation incident involving a passenger who began bleeding onboard an aircraft prior to departure. The event took place on an Abuja-Calabar flight after passengers were reportedly kept inside the cabin for nearly fifty minutes without active engines or functioning air conditioning.
The affected passenger, Bashir Usman, shared details of the ordeal on social media, explaining that the extreme cabin heat caused him to start bleeding. According to his account, cabin crew members attempted to have him disembarked to mitigate potential health risks, but fellow passengers intervened, expressing concern and offering assistance such as manual fanning until he was permitted to remain on the flight.
NCAA spokesperson Michael Achimugu confirmed that he reached out to the passenger following the incident to express sympathy and discuss the situation. Achimugu noted that Usman explained the bleeding was triggered by heat and was a pre-existing condition, though the crew had no prior knowledge of this medical history when they sought to remove him for his own safety.
While defending the cabin crew's adherence to standard safety procedures and vigilance regarding public health, Achimugu confirmed that the regulatory body has escalated the matter. The Directorate of Operations, Licensing and Training Standards will examine the circumstances surrounding the prolonged delay on the tarmac and the overall handling of passenger comfort and safety.
