Edo State Revenue Service Seals Nine Chinese-Owned Companies Over N8.98bn Tax Liabilities

The Edo State Internal Revenue Service has taken enforcement action against nine companies operating within the state, sealing their premises over unpaid tax liabilities amounting to N8.982 billion. The affected business entities are situated in the Utesi Community within the Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area and are predominantly owned by Chinese nationals.

According to the Head of Corporate Communications and Taxpayers Enlightenment Service at the revenue agency, the affected establishments include Rongtai Plastic Company Limited, Rongtai Hardware Limited, Rongtai Energy Technology Company Limited, Rongtai Building Materials Company Limited, and Rongtai Food Company Limited. Other sealed businesses are Five Star Wire and Cable Company, Xin Guo Technology Nigeria Limited, Changrong Wood Nigeria Limited, and Shunda Nigeria Enterprise.

Tax authorities explained that the substantial debt accumulated due to repeated non-compliance with statutory tax regulations. Specifically, the firms failed to register their workforce for the Pay-As-You-Earn tax scheme, neglected to file mandatory annual employers tax returns, and omitted the deduction and remittance of appropriate worker taxes.

Officials confirmed that the enforcement operation was executed under the authority of valid orders issued by an Edo State High Court. Prior to sealing the properties, the revenue service had served formal notices outlining the financial liabilities and issued multiple reminders urging compliance, which the management of the targeted firms reportedly ignored.

The agency stated that the operational sites will remain restricted until the management of the defaulting companies fully settles their outstanding financial obligations to the state government.
