The Independent National Electoral Commission has disclosed that Rivers State leads the South-South geopolitical zone with 3,736,434 registered voters out of a regional total of 15,823,550. The figures were released by the INEC Chairman during a South-South Zonal Interactive Meeting with Staff and Readiness Assessment held in Port Harcourt.
During the gathering, the electoral chief emphasized that no eligible citizen should face disenfranchisement due to administrative errors or logistical shortcomings. He urged officials to maintain rigorous preparation standards and announced that the final voters register is scheduled for publication on December 15, 2026, following the ongoing display, claims, and objections period.
To address logistical hurdles presented by creeks and riverine settlements across the South-South, the Commission has finalized a Memorandum of Understanding with the Maritime Transporters Union. This agreement aims to secure timely delivery of election personnel and materials to difficult terrains. In addition, INEC is auditing electronic result management systems and preparing newly procured Bimodal Voter Accreditation Devices.
Security and staff welfare were also key focal points during the discussions. The electoral body reaffirmed its partnership with security agencies through consultative committees to protect voters and officials, issuing warnings against any attacks on personnel. Furthermore, leadership highlighted newly introduced staff welfare packages, including enhanced salary structures and increased operational allocations for state offices.
