The Abia State government has reiterated its commitment to establishing responsible mining practices that protect local natural resources, support economic growth, and ensure long-term sustainability across the region. Governor Alex Otti made this known while officially opening a one-day stakeholders summit focused on the mining sector, which was organized by the Abia State command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps in the capital city of Umuahia.

Speaking through the state attorney general and commissioner for justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna, the governor emphasized that the administration remains steadfast in encouraging lawful economic endeavors throughout the state. He noted that the thematic focus of the gathering, which centered on promoting responsible mineral development and strict adherence to government regulations, aligns closely with the broader economic development agenda of the state.

Highlighting the strategic importance of the sector, the administration acknowledged the vast potential of solid minerals to serve as vital catalysts for industrialization, economic diversification, job creation, and sustainable progress. Officials expressed optimism that the deliberations would help curb illegal practices, boost local economic well-being, and guarantee that host communities receive fair benefits from the extraction activities taking place within their domains.

The state commandant of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, Chukwurmeka Odimba, earlier addressed participants by stressing that achieving long-term sustainability in the industry demands active cooperation from all involved parties. He called upon attendees to formulate practical solutions that prevent mining from causing environmental destruction, community conflicts, insecurity, and financial losses.

Echoing these sentiments, a representative of the State Mining Association, Nenye Osuara, welcomed the initiative as a crucial step toward organizing and regulating the sector more effectively. Stakeholders at the event agreed that collaborative teamwork is essential to building a mining environment that safeguards community peace and drives lawful prosperity across Abia State.
