President Bola Tinubu has formally approved the establishment of the Ibom Deep Seaport project in Akwa Ibom State. The announcement was made during a public reception and rally held in honour of the President at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where he was visiting to inaugurate various infrastructure projects completed by the state administration.
The approval came in direct response to an appeal presented by Governor Umo Eno, who urged the Federal Government to support the long-pending maritime development. Governor Eno emphasized that the seaport is critical for expanding maritime activities, driving regional economic growth, and creating thousands of jobs for citizens within Akwa Ibom State, the wider South-South region, and the country at large.
During the event, Governor Eno pledged that the state would secure two million votes for the President's re-election bid in 2027 if the federal administration successfully delivered the infrastructure project. He noted that the seaport had been a central priority for the local population for decades, having been initially conceptualized during the tenure of former Governor Victor Attah.
President Tinubu previously signaled support for the maritime venture during his 2023 presidential campaign stop in Uyo, drawing comparisons to the Lekki Deep Seaport model in Lagos. The latest federal greenlight represents a significant milestone in the state's ongoing efforts to enhance its maritime capacity and attract international trade.
